Approaches to Antiviral Agents

Eleven articles by leading researchers present an authoritative account and critical evaluation of currently available scientific and medical information relevant to the discovery and application of antiviral agents. The contributors have sought to establish the clinical situations in which antiviral chemotherapy is required, the virus-specific processes that might be amenable to selective inhibition, and the host defense mechanisms that might be manipulated to facilitate recovery from viral infections. Other questions specifically addressed concern which compounds are known to have antiviral or immunoregulatory properties, how they were discovered and what their biological activities and mechanisms of action are, and what potentially are the most promising sources of new useful antiviral agents. It is hoped that the answers to these questions will further the increasing attention now being paid to research on the chemotherapy of viral diseases and provoke ideas leading to the discovery of additional useful antiviral drugs.
