Poet, novelist, and linguist Kenin-Lopsan (b. 1925) collects stories and songs of the shamanic traditions that are still practiced as part of daily life in his native Tuva, a mountainous region of Siberia on the northern border of Mongolia. Few are longer than a half page. Also included are essays on aspects of shamanism, a dictionary without pronunciation, 23 illustrations of tools and figures, a history of studies on the subject, and a bibliography.
