Customized Corneal Ablation: The Quest for Supervision

Based on the proceedings of the First International Congress on Wavefront Sensing and Aberration-Free Refractive Correction held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in February 2000, this text contains five introductory pieces discussing customized ablation, extending the limits of human vision, the history and methods of ophthalmic wavefront sensing, retinal imaging using adaptive optics, and the physics of customized corneal ablation. Successive sections, containing from three to six contributions, address basic science issues in wavefront- guided custom ablation; a clinical science section of wavefront-guided custom ablation addressing outgoing optics aberrometry, retinal imaging aberrometry, and ingoing adjustable refractometry; basic and clinical science issues in corneal topography-guided ablations; surgeon-guided customized ablation; and the future of customization.
