The two studies presented here investigate how structural changes in industrialization in developing countries influence changes in relationships within households: in particular, how the distribution of power between men and women and between age groups within the domestic unit are affected. Among the policy implications arising from this study is the need for policy makers to consider how new technologies affect the quality of work and life among different occupational categories, particularly among low-level industrial workers and between genders.

Regions at Risk: Comparisons of Threatened Environments

Human-induced environmental change is to be found throughout the world, but there are areas that scientists consider to be “critical regions” – regions that are particularly vulnerable to or suffering from environmental degradation. In this volume nine such “critical environmental regions” (Amazonia, the Aral Sea basin, the middle mountains of Nepal, Kenya’s Ukambani region, the US Southern High Plains, the Mexico Basin, the North Sea, the Ordos Plateau of China, and the eastern Sundaland region of South-East Asia) are examined as case-studies. In chapter one the authors provide a detailed look into the concepts of environmental criticality and endangerment and propose formal definitions. The nine regional studies that follow in the subsequent chapters serve to translate the conceptual framework into the physical and social realities of each area.
The case-studies make available an up-to-date synthesis of vast amounts of inaccessible data, and as such will be valuable to scholars and policy makers interested in specific areas of the world and others interested in regional comparisons. Anyone concerned with global environmental change, criticality, human-environment interactions, and how societies in different regions have responded to environmental degradation will find much that is new and important in this pioneering, innovative study.

Misuse of the soil and inappropriate agricultural systems are causing serious degradation of the humid tropical eco-region and perpetuating food shortages, malnutrition, and poor standards of living.
What is needed are sustainable agricultural systems that can satisfy human needs while maintaining soil fertility and the integrity of the environment. This publication makes available research information on scientifically proven methods of deforestation for conversion to agricultural land use, and soil and crop management systems that allow for the sustained use of soil and water resources in the humid tropics. The reader will find numerous examples of appropriate techniques with explanations of their impacts on production, soil quality, and the environment. Information is provided on the characteristics of an improved farming system; new land development; run-off management and erosion control; nutrient management; and, in the final section, research and development priorities are outlined.
